Understanding states with the highest electric bills
Across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, average monthly bill spans from $212.12 in Hawaii at the top of the list to $92.88 in New Mexico at the bottom. The three at the top are Hawaii, Connecticut, and Alabama; the three at the bottom are Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico.
Hawaii has the highest average residential electric bill, about $212 a month in 2024, followed by Connecticut at about $200 and Alabama at about $174. New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado have the lowest bills, around $93 to $101. The national average was $142.
The bill and the price do not always rank together. Hawaii, California, and southern New England pay the highest prices per kilowatt-hour. Alabama's price is slightly below the national average, but hot summers and widespread electric heating mean its homes use about a third more electricity than the typical US home, so its bills end up near the top. California pays the second-highest price in the country, yet a mild climate and lower use keep its average bill, about $161, well below Hawaii's and Connecticut's.
These figures cover electricity only. Homes heated with natural gas, propane, or heating oil pay a separate bill for that fuel, which is why some cold states show modest electric bills. Each state profile lists the residential natural gas price alongside its electricity figures.
